The Taj Mahal is a monument of love constructed from 1632-54 at Agra in Uttar Pradesh, India, as a mausoleum for Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of Shah Jahan. It was built of white marble and inlaid with semi-precious stones and elaborate mosaic work. The structure consists of a huge central dome surrounded by four smaller domes, flanked by four slim minarets. The whole is mirrored in an ornamental pool.
