The Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the municipality of Schwangau in the southwest edge of the German state of Bavaria. The castle was built in the mid-1800's by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It was built on the ruins of two previous castles and was intended as a private residence of the king. He moved into the still unfinished palace in 1884, and only slept there 11 nights. After his death in 1886, the castle became a tourist site, one of the most popular of all palaces and castles in Europe. It is visited by 1.4 million every year, as many as 6,000 per day.
